Mother Charged With Murder Of 4-Day-Old Son (Photos)

A North Carolina woman has been arrested after admitting to suffocating her newborn son because he would not stop crying.

Aishia Marie Pacheco, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 4-day-old son Tyler Pacheco, WBTV reported.

Paramedics received a call about an unresponsive baby on May 24, and gave CPR instructions over the phone to Pacheco, the Charlotte Observer reported. When first responders arrived, they declared the baby dead on the scene.

The infant, who had bruising on his face, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for an autopsy. Authorities suspect the child may have actually died on May 23.

Alexander County Sheriff Chris Bowman told reporters that Pacheco admitted to him that she suffocated her baby because it wouldn't stop crying.

"That she held the baby up to her chest because the baby had been crying and actually smothered the child," Bowman said.

Pacheco had recently taken to Facebook to express her excitement for becoming a mother. She posted pictures of the baby, and said she was in labor for 10 hours.

Pacheco is currently being held on a $1 million bond. When asked if she killed her baby on purpose, she told WBTV, "It was an accident," and added "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it."

Bowman is calling the incident a tragedy.

“There are lots of individuals out there [who are] begging for a child that can't have children.” Bowman said. “It's just a crying shame that something like this had to happen.”

Pacheco will appear in Alexander County District Court June 6. The investigation is ongoing.
