A Virginia mother’s grateful Facebook post to a state trooper who helped her son with a flat tire went viral, with the mother praising the officer as a hero.

Last week, Virginia Tech student Joseph Owusu was on his way home from school when he got a flat tire in “the middle of nowhere.” According to Dr. Nada Owusu, Joseph’s mother, state trooper Matt Okes approached her son and offered to help.

“This kind officer approached him, didn’t ask if the little Mercedes was stolen, but rather got on his knees to replace his tire,” Owusu wrote in a Facebook post, alongside a photo she took of Okes and Joseph at 2 a.m.

“When his effort failed he stayed with my son all night till we arrived at 1am with triple A,” the post continued. “He provided all the needed protection especially from those tractor trailers till we were done by 2 am and till drove behind us for a while before exiting.”

The Facebook post quickly went viral and was shared more than 20,000 times. Talk show host Montel Williams even shared the post and applauded Okes for his selfless gesture.

“Too often we look at very specific instances where police miss the mark,” Williams wrote. “And it's equally if not more important to recognize the countless Trooper Okes of the world who quietly serve with distinction and embody everything we want our police to be.”

Owusu echoed Williams’ sentiment, saying that she was simply grateful that a Good Samaritan, regardless of his profession, was there to help her son when he needed assistance.

“There’s a lot of good in this world and people want to hear positive stories,” she said. “As far as I was concerned, there was a good person waiting with my son. I didn’t care if he was green, blue, yellow. There’s a lot of good in America and that needs to be heard. Police need our support.”
