Just when you thought “the dress” was behind you, a new optical illusion is driving the Internet crazy and has caused many to say they will retire from social media altogether.
The illusion, originally shared by Twitter user @totallymendes, shows a simple photo of two bottles of nail polish next to a shoe. Alongside the photo, @totallymendes asks followers to figure out which color of nail polish was the closest match in color to the shoe.
The simple post quickly began to go viral after it was retweeted by Vine star Jack Johnson, causing an Internet-wide debate over which color matched the shoe.
“Oh sh*t. I think I just stumbled upon the new 'Blue or Gold Dress,'” Johnson wrote.
Like its dress predecessor, some who looked at the shoe photo saw it one way while others came to the opposite conclusion. With the help of Photoshop, however, it was ultimately determined that the left polish best matched the shoe, Business Insider revealed.
For many, the shoe debate proved to be the last straw — prompting them to leave their Twitter handles behind and retire from the social media site.
“My reaction to #theshoe,” one user wrote alongside a screenshot of their Twitter app being deleted from their phone.
“#theshoe is a thing now? I guess I’ll dedicate this tweet to the millions of arguments and lost friendships waiting to happen,” another user tweeted.
What color do you think best matches the shoe?
