Ex-Homeless Woman Pays For Poor Kids' Lunches (Video)

The story of a former homeless mom in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has gone viral after she paid for school lunches for some local poor children (video below).

The story began when Josette Duran posted a Facebook Live video about her son asking her to pack an extra lunch for a classmate at the beginning of the school year.

"It's not for praise or anything, I'm just telling you, but it's pretty intense," Duran said in her video.

"He said, 'No, Mom. It's for this little boy at school, and he sits by himself, and all he eats is a fruit cup,'" Duran told KOAT.

Duran was called into the school principal's office after the other boy's mother learned that Duran was packing lunches for her son; the mom tried to pay Duran back.

"She says, 'I know this isn't much, but I just got a job, and I know you've been feeding my son,'" Duran recalled on Facebook.

However, Duran refused to accept the mom's money for the lunches.

The school's girls volleyball team, which is coached by Duran, raised over $400 to compensate her, but Duran used the money to pay all the debts that other children owed to the school cafeteria.

"We paid up all the past due accounts for all the kids that need lunch," Duran recalled on Facebook. "So now, no one in that school owes any lunch money to anybody, and everybody can eat."

Duran described her own past as a homeless mom to KOAT: "This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless. I was living in my car. I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn't have food."

In a follow-up video on her Facebook page on Oct. 17, Duran said that she didn't expect her original video, which was made for her Facebook buddies, to go viral, and was hesitant to be interviewed by the media because she didn't think she "did anything special."

"I just did what a human being is supposed to do," Duran said. "That's just what I was taught."
