Several Londoners are angry with Donald Trump Jr.'s recent criticism of their mayor following an attack on pedestrians and a police officer that transpired on Mar. 23, and are furiously tweeting about it.
"You use a terrorist attack on our city to attack London's Mayor for your own political gain. You're a disgrace," tweeted British Labour Member of Parliament Wes Streeting.
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, responded to Trump Jr.'s controversial statements on Mar. 23 on CNN: "I'm not going to respond to a tweet from Donald Trump Jr. I've been doing far more important things over the past 24 hours."
Lone-wolf attacker Khalid Masood drove his car into pedestrians on March 23 as they were crossing Westminster Bridge before wrecking the car into the gates of the parliament building. He subsequently stabbed a police officer before being shot dead, the Daily Mail reports.
In response to the attack, Trump Jr. tweeted a link to an interview that Mayor Khan gave in September in which the politician said the threat of terrorism was "part and parcel" of living in any major city.
"It is a reality I'm afraid that London, New York, other major cities around the world have got to be prepared for these sorts of things," he told the Evening Standard.
"That means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities, it means the security services being ready, but also it means exchanging ideas and best practice."
Trump Jr. only referred to a part of the mayor's original statement when he tweeted: "You have to be kidding me?! Terror attacks are part of living in a big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan."
News correspondent Ciaran Jenkins tweeted him back with: "Did you even read the article before goading London's Mayor during a live incident?"
Jenkins then added: "Headline is based on very first sentence, which if you'd bothered to read it could apply to any major city in the world. Key word: 'threat.'"
"Learn to read the article not just the headline you tangerine goblin spawn," wrote author Aaron Gillies.
One Londoner posted a series of tweets to Don Jr, that read: "Dear [Trump Jr.], Before you start, don't you DARE use our tragedy to justify your racism. Yours, A proud Londoner."
Several Americans also joined the wave of mockery aimed at Trump Jr.
"Veep" star Timothy Simmons said: "My dude i am compulsively checking twitter b/c I want to know the very *second* your entire world comes crashing down."
In a tweet that was later deleted, "The Ellen Show" producer Andy Lassner wrote: "You did it [Trump Jr.]! You're as big a d*** as your dad!"
