Bad Timing: Debra Messing Posts Gun-Violence Selfie

Actress Debra Messing is in hot water after a poorly timed tweet sparked an internet backlash.

According to Breitbart News, the "Will and Grace" star was apparently posing for a pre-planned ad campaign aimed at raising awareness of gun violence, when a shooting occurred on UCLA's campus which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

In response to the shooting, many celebrities posted heartfelt remarks to social media, but Messing tweeted a selfie with the caption:  "HORRENDOUS watching news about shooting at UCLA with casualties while taking selfie 2bring awareness to Gun Violence.

The 47-year-old actress was immediately slammed for being narcissistic and trying to make the incident about her rather than about the victims.

ET online reports that Messing subsequently deleted the tweet, and tried to explain her actions with a series of new tweets which stated that the day was a 'predetermined day of awareness,' and that people should not 'belittle the effort' she was making.

Eventually, Messing gave up on her justifications and simply offered this written apology:

I was so shocked and struck by the horrible IRONY that yet another shooting was occurring as I was participating in this effort... In an effort to highlight the irony, I posted a picture referencing the breaking news.  I am heartbroken and embarrassed that many people misconstrued my actions and that I caused offense. The horrendous irony of the timing, I was hoping, would shine an even brighter light on the crisis and need for all of us to do something together to make the US safer. I am so truly sorry.
