'Are You Serious?': Man Blocks Off Houston Highway, Does Something Shocking (Video)

Vidal Valladares Navas asked his friends to block traffic on Interstate-45 in Houston on Dec. 13 while he proposed to his girlfriend Michelle Wycoff (video below).

"I just wanted to do something different," Valladares Navas told the Houston Chronicle.

"I said, 'Are you serious?'" Wycoff said. "Then I saw all my family and friends with cameras and I looked where Vidal was and he was down on one knee."

"Honestly, I didn't think about if it was a good idea or a bad idea," Wycoff added. "I was just so happy in the moment. I love him so much."

Valladares Navas was equally oblivious to the traffic problems.

"I never really thought about causing an accident," he said. "I thought about my girlfriend."

However, there was quite a bit outcry against the couple on the highway and on social media.

"Sigh...Guy blocks off I-45, just for a proposal," one Imgur user wrote. "People could have been hurt. This has to be illegal, right? (DON'T BLOCK I-45)."

"It appears we were not called to the scene and it more than likely happened quickly before our officers saw it on patrol," Houston Police Department spokesman Victor Senties told the Houston Chronicle on Dec. 15.

"While we're happy for the couple, this is not something we would want to encourage anyone to do," Senties added. "People could have lost their lives stopping on the freeway like that."

"If there was a similar scenario and the officers were called to the scene to witness it, the officers would tell them to clear the roadway and if they refused, they could be arrested with blocking a roadway, which is a Class B misdemeanor," Senties said.

However, later that day, the HPD charged Navas with obstruction of a highway, a Class B misdemeanor, ABC 13 reports.

After he was charged, Valladares Navas apologized to the public during an interview with ABC 13.

"I feel bad," Valladares Navas said on Dec. 15. "And, of course, I just want to apologize to everyone if I caused any problems, that wasn't my intention at the beginning."

However, the video clearly shows problems were caused by the couple blocking traffic.

Wycoff also had a sudden change of heart and offered her apology as well.
