New photographs received by the Curiosity rover on Mars have inspired bizarre interpretations, with some suggesting that the images feature mermaids and iguanas.
Conspiracy theorists have suggested that they have spotted an Egyptian Pyramid on Mars in addition to human skulls, a levitating sphere and a human woman, CNN reported. Theorists predict that the woman, however, is only about 3 inches tall.

The interest in the photos was sparked by a recent article written by Scott C. Waring for UFO Sightings Delay. Waring wrote that he initially spotted a crashed UFO in the photos. He concluded that the UFO could probably carry around 20 to 40 passengers.
Ashwin Vasavada, a scientist who works on the Mars rover project, has since stepped in and clarified that the speculations regarding the images are fictitious.
“We have color HD cameras on this rover that far exceed anything ever sent to the planet before,” Vasavada told CNN. “And yet in order to find these things that kind of trick your brain into thinking it’s a mermaid or whatever, you do have to zoom in where it’s kind of a fuzzy shadow at that point.”

It’s believed that Vasavada was referring to pareidolia, a phenomenon in which a person’s brain tricks them into thinking they recognize a shape that isn’t actually there.
NASA is not currently pursuing leads based on any of the conspiracy theory speculations.
