Comedian and activist Chelsea Handler is under fire for a tweet which insinuates Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is gay and being blackmailed by President Donald Trump to support his policies on immigration.
"Holy, f**k f**k," Handler tweeted on Jan. 10. "I just saw the video of trumps bipartisan 'meeting' yesterday. Hey, [Lindsey Graham] what kind of d**k sucking video do they have on your for you 2 be acting like this? Wouldn't coming out be more honorable?"
The tweet has been liked more than 25, 000 times as of Jan. 12.
Handler is referring to a bipartisan immigration meeting held at the White House on Jan. 9. During the meeting, Trump and congressional lawmakers, including Graham, discussed negotiating a deal which would allow immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, otherwise known as Dreamers, to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation.
"Most fascinating meeting I've been involved with in twenty plus years of politics," Graham tweeted after the meeting. "I very much appreciate [Donald Trump's] attitude, demeanor, and desire to get something done that will make our nation more secure - while being fair to the #Dreamers."
It sems Graham's attitude toward Trump was too friendly for Handler, who singled him out in her tweet, reviving old allegations that the never-married South Carolina Republican is secretly gay.
Graham directly addressed the rumors about him during a 2010 interview with The New York Times. At that time, it was members of the right-wing Tea Party making claims about Graham's sexuality for being too willing to work with Democrats in the Senate.
"Like maybe I'm having a clandestine affair with Ricky Martin," Graham told The Times. "I know it's really gonna upset a lot of gay men -- I'm sure hundreds of 'em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge -- but I ain't available. I ain't gay. Sorry."
Reaction to Handler's tweet from right-wing Twitter users was swift.
"Just reported this explicitly anti-gay tweet," wrote pro-Trump political strategist Chis Barron. "Odds on twitter doing something? Less than zero. If a conservative said this they would be suspended immediately."
Commenters on Handler's tweet were also quick to dismiss her allegation.
"This woman's language and fantasy life is a sad one," wrote one. "She's all used up - in every way. Most mature people don't care what other adults do in private, but if private knowledge is used to cause pain or humiliation we avoid the abusers. That means you, Chelsea, the 'over-handled.'"
"Keep being a voice for the Democrats while you use homosexuality as an insult," wrote another. "The [GOP] will gladly take the LGBT votes."
