A video featuring a cat switching from barking like a dog to meowing again after being caught by its owner went viral.
In the 22-second clip (below), a black cat can be seen from behind, with its head sticking out of a window and making barking sounds. But when it realizes its owner is behind it, holding a camera, the cat immediately goes back to meowing.
"While it isn't super normal, it's not unheard of for cats to bark,” Nicholas Dodman, a veterinary behaviorist and professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, tells Live Science. "The arrangement of the cat's larynx, trachea and diaphragm is similar enough to a dog's that if they operate the machinery in the right way, it will produce a noise that's like a bark."
When an indoor cat watches other animals, such as birds or a squirrel, through a window, or sometimes on television, it makes a chattering noise, notes PetPlace.com. It may make a noise that sounds like a cry if it is really excited.
The clip currently has more than 21 million views since it was first posted to YouTube.
