Given the choice between a team of two football players or a 124-pound mother of four, smart gamblers would put their money on the football players to win an eating contest.
But anyone who bet against Molly Schuyler at Sunday’s “72-ounce Showdown” at the Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo, Texas, lost money and just might have witnessed history being made.
CNN reports Schuyler managed to scarf down three 72-ounce steaks in just 20 minutes at the restaurant’s annual eating contest, easily besting a field of two-person teams made up of football players, professional wrestlers and competitive-eating circuit regulars.
Video (shown below) of the contest shows the slender 35-year-old, wearing sunglasses and a black hoodie, calmly bellying-up to the table and going to work on her competition.
Schuyler, who lives in Sacramento, California, is a competitive eater who boasts having once eaten 363 chicken wings in 30 minutes. And she’s been to the Big Texan’s contest before; last year she won it by devouring two of the 72-ounce chunks of meat.
But gobbling more than 13 pounds of steak along with three baked potatoes, three side salads, three rolls and three shrimp cocktails might just be more than a personal all-time best.
According to KVII News, her name has now been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Bobby Lee, co-owner of the Big Texan, told KVII that he’s been watching people eat for a long time and he’s never seen anybody pull off what Schuyler did over the weekend.
"We've been doing this contest since 1960, and in all that time we've never had anybody come in to actually eat that many steaks at one time," he said. "So this is a first for us, and after 55 years of it, it's a big deal.”
Schuyler took home $5,000 for winning the competition, but she told KVII she was just glad she didn’t have to pay for her meal.
"It's free, so I'm pretty happy about that," she said. "Otherwise it would have cost me about 300 bucks."
