Jessee Gutierrez has been working as a bartender at Texas Road House in Odessa, Texas, for four years, and over the weekend, he received the tip of a lifetime.
Over the weekend of Oct. 30, Gutierrez was collecting a bill when he realized the longtime customer had given him a $1,000 tip, NewsWest 9 reports.
“I didn’t know what to expect and when he was talking to me,” Gutierrez told NewsWest 9, “there were tears in his eyes and he was just like, ‘There's something on my heart that's telling me to do this for you.’
“He goes, 'I see that you have a family, I see that you have a wife, a (3-month-old) baby. He was like I want to make sure that this makes it a lot easier for you in the next couple of months.'"
The customer hasn’t been identified, but Gutierrez says he’s grateful for the gesture.
This isn't the first time a restaurant customer's generosity has made headlines. In July, a customer at the Smokey Barque BBQ restaurant in Frankfort, Illinois, left a $1,000 tip on a $20 meal, The Huffington Post reported at the time. The customer left a note along with the tip, writing that he hoped the tip helped the waiter reach his "hopes and dreams."
