When a college freshman in Pennsylvania neglected to clean his bedroom over Christmas break, his mother decided that some tough love was in order.
Connor Cox, 18, was excited when he received a care package from his mother, Terri, in January.
"I was thrilled, because it's like Christmas when you get mail from family when you’re in college," he told BuzzFeed.
But Connor quickly discovered that this was no ordinary care package.
"I got two boxes and I opened one and it had food in it and I realized there wasn't food in the other one," he told ABC News. "It was a bunch of trash, tissues [and] soda cans."
The Westminster College student dialed his mom's number for an explanation.
"[I said] 'Did you send me the wrong package? Why did you send me this?'" he recalled. "[She said] 'No that's the trash you were supposed to take out."
Speaking to BuzzFeed, Terri said she felt she had to teach Connor a lesson.
"I have raised and taught Connor better than this, and his actions deserve consequences -- even if they are humorous," she said.
"His room should be left the way it was when he came home for Christmas break, which I cleaned before he came home," she added.
Connor took a picture of the garbage and posted it to Twitter, where it received over 1,900 likes.
"She has a good sense of humor," he said of his mom. "She's always really caring and she knows what to say at the exact time she should say it. She's a good mom."
He added that the prank was an example of the special relationship the two of them share.
"It's not a normal mom-son relationship," he said. "She's kind of like my best friend -- it's special for sure."
