Shaima Al Awadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi victim of a brutal beating, died over the weekend in her San Diego, California home, when her family removed her from life support per her doctor's advice (video below).
Awadi, a mother of five, immigrated to the U.S. from Iraq in 1993.
Last Wednesday, her daughter, Fatima al-Himidi, found Awadi “drowning in her own blood.”
Al-Himidi said her mother was beaten with a tire iron and told KUSI-TV that a note near her mom read: “Go back to your country, you terrorist.”
al-Himidi said on KUSI-TV: “We’re not the terrorists. You are, whoever did it.”
Police spokesman Lt. Mark Coit added: "A hate crime is one of the possibilities, and we will be looking at that. We don’t want to focus on only one issue and miss something else."
“One Million Hijabs for Shaima Al Awadi” has been launched on Facebook. Wake Forest and Salem students took up the call to wear hoodies and hijabs (#Hoodiesandhijabs) in support of the tragic victim.
