Video: Michele Bachmann Joking about Hurricane Irene Being Message From God?

According to her spokesperson, Rep. Michele Bachmann was joking when she said that the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene were a message from God. During a weekend campaign stop in Sarasota, Florida, Bachmann said "I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake. We've had a hurricane" (video below).

Bachmann continued, "He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending."

"Obviously she was saying it in jest," Bachmann's campaign spokeswoman, Alice Stewart, told in a statement.

However, Bachmann has claimed to have messages from God in the past, including running for Congress and becoming a tax lawyer. pointed out that Bachmann's "joke" was poorly timed. Hurricane Irene has reportedly contributed to at least 32 to deaths. Bachmann is not the only conservative to say that the hurricane was a message from God. On Saturday, radio host Glenn Beck said the hurricane was a "blessing."

What do you think, was Michele Bachmann joking?
