Teacher Takes "God" out of 'We Are the World' Song

Following a scandal at Stall Brook Elementary School in Bellingham, Massachusetts, where a school official removed “God” from Lee Greenwood’s tune 'God Bless the USA,' a teacher in Earlysville, Virginia has removed the word "God" from the song 'We Are the World.'

For an upcoming 4th and 5th grade performance at Albemarle County’s Broadus Wood Elementary School, music teacher Jean Flaherty altered key lines from the 1985 Michael Jackson/Lionel Richie composition.

The second half of the first verse, as composed by Jackson and Richie, reads: "We are all a part of God’s great big family," which Flaherty changed to "We are all a part of one great big family."

Flaherty made an additional change to the lyrics "As God has shown us by turning stones to bread," which now reads "We can’t let them suffer; no we cannot turn away."

Flaherty has reportedly told parents that their kids are allowed to sing "God” instead of the modified verse if they so choose.
