Christian fundamentalism is known for its' support of the belief that women are obligated to obey their husbands. See, the belief of many on the religious right is that women are inferior in status to men and men are superior to women, as the deity is to man. While a god rules the universe, the man rules his household. Of course, this like a lot of things about religion, is total and complete bunk. Take these examples of Christian right-wing support for this concept of women inferiority, but in these cases when it comes to the beating of a wife by her husband:
In June 2007, professor of Christian theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Bruce Ware told a Texas church that women often bring abuse on themselves by refusing to submit. And Debi Pearl, half of a husband-and-wife fundamentalist child-training ministry as well as author of the bestselling submission manual, Created to Be His Help Meet, writes that submission is so essential to God's plan that it must be followed even to the point of allowing abuse. "When God puts you in subjection to a man whom he knows is going to cause you to suffer", she writes, "it is with the understanding that you are obeying God by enduring the wrongful suffering.Rick Warren, who is known as something of a more moderate person on the Christian right-wing, believes that women should get counseling instead of divorce if beaten. He laments there isn't a biblical verse to justify divorce in these cases (why should it when the god of the bible is fine with such domestic violence) but that women should just endure it and maybe get counseling. These are the theocrats who wish to lead our nation? The Rick Perrys? The Michelle Bachmanns? Are we going to have men who come along and beat women for being in public with a non-related man, as in Saudi Arabia? The religious right wishes to control the lives of others, that is why most of them still support anti-sodomy laws to be directed against gay men. As someone once said, if fascism comes to America, it will be waving a cross. How true.
