A University of Connecticut professor was caught on video chewing out a Christian evangelist, cursing him out and leading students to chant “Praise Darwin.”
Anthropology professor James Boster was filmed confronting Don Karns, an evangelist toting a sign reading "Evolution is a lie" on April 23.
In the video posted by YouTube user 4ChristianNews, Boster demands to know if the proselytizing group has ever read “Origin of Species.”
“Bullsh**! Bullsh**! You are full of ignorance and lies!” the prof yells. “I want you to feel ashamed that you are willing to call something a lie that you have never actually read.”
Boster defended himself, telling NBC Chicago that it was Karns and his evangelical crew who had been insulting students’ ethnicities and sexualities.
“When they attacked the student, I went out to confront them,” Boster said. “It was my moral duty to become outraged.”
“Shame on you for condemning someone to hell that they don't even know,” he added.
But Boster also described the “Praise Darwin” chant he led as a kind of theatrical happening.
“I was trying to engage them as cast members in the drama that I was creating,” Boster said.
Boster admitted he was in “deep trouble” with UConn’s dean.
The university issued a statement condemning Boster’s outburst.
“Everyone has the right to exercise free speech on our campuses. At the same time, we expect our faculty to act in a way that promotes civil discourse and to express themselves respectfully. The use of abusive language and the confrontational posture seen here are inconsistent with UConn’s values,” it read.
