Pastor Kevin Swanson criticized the Girl Scouts of America during his "Generations" radio show on March 10 because of what he believes is the organization's promotion of "lesbianism, abortion and contraception for 14-year-old girls" (video below).
According to RightWingWatch.org, Swanson has previously called for boycotting Girl Scout cookies, but this time took it further by quoting a verse from the Bible and applying it to drowning the Girl Scouts leadership.
Swanson began the segment by saying he had been persecuted by "media pushback," and added that the Girl Scouts of America are promoting "lesbianism, abortion and contraception for 14-year-old girls."
"I understand you don't gain much ground when you take on American icons, but we take Matthew 18:6 seriously, friends, it's our Lord Jesus Christ.
"He said it in no uncertain terms, 'If somebody offends one of these little ones who believes in me, it would be better for him that a millstone to be hanged around his neck and he be drowned at the bottom of the sea,' the mafia treatment.
"This is one of Jesus' most serious statements ever made in all of his ministry and I gotta take that seriously.
"Jesus means it when he says if you offend one of these little ones, and when you make the wrong choices in terms of their pedia, their training, and you set them before 'How to Train Your Dragon' mentors who happen to be homosexuals, or movies that promote homosexuality, or organizations that promote homosexuality, when you offend one of these little ones that believes in me, it would be better for you that a millstone be hanged around your neck and you be drowned at the bottom of the sea.
"Those are serious words, Steve, and you gotta take him seriously. If you believe that Jesus Christ is God, he is the very source of truth, and he means what he says, you gotta take what he says and you have to apply it."
According to the Girl Scouts website, the organization "does not take a position or develop materials on [human sexuality, birth control, and abortion]. We feel our role is to help girls develop self-confidence and good decision-making skills that will help them make wise choices in all areas of their lives."
The site adds, "Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe."
