An interesting new discovery from the treasure trove of writings taken from Osama bin Laden’s Abottabad complex reveals the al Qaeda chief’s fury with his ineffectual underlings and his determination to target President Obama personally.
The recently translated documents are part of a glut of material seized by Navy SEAL Team 6 during its raid on bin Laden’s final hiding place. The U.S. army posted their findings online this week at the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.
One of the most interesting revelations hidden in the documents is that towards the end of bin Laden’s life he had been working almost single-mindedly towards killing President Obama and General David Petraeus. The terror kingpin’s reasoning was that these two American figures posed the greatest threat to his violent Islamist empire and that the assassination of President Obama in particular would raise a “totally unprepared” Joe Biden to power.
“I asked Shaykh Sa'id, Allah have mercy on his soul, to task brother Ilyas to prepare two groups - one in Pakistan and the other in the Bagram area of Afghanistan - with the mission of anticipating and spotting the visits of Obama or Petraeus to Afghanistan or Pakistan to target the aircraft of either one of them,” writes bin Laden.
“The reason for concentrating on them is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make Biden take over the presidency for the remainder of the term, as it is the norm over there. Biden is totally unprepared for that post, which will lead the U.S. into a crisis. As for Petraeus, he is the man of the hour in this last year of the war, and killing him would alter the war's path.”
This quotation adds an important brush stroke to a chilling portrait of a mad man, hell bent on the downfall of America up until his last dying breath. Despite facing personal isolation and internal strife among al Qaida leaders and branch groups, bin Laden continued to hatch half-baked plots against the United States until that fateful evening when an elite group of Navy SEALS put a bullet between his eyes.
