New Zealand Father To Take School To Court For Bible Lessons

One New Zealand father will see to it that his daughter is kept far away from her school's Bible lessons.

After Jeff McClintock placed his daughter Violet, 9, in a New Zealand school, he was angered to learn that the school had been placing her in Bible classes without his permission.

Despite taking advantage of the choice to "opt out" of the program, the school still repeatedly reintroduced the lessons to Violet, citing them as "history lessons," according to The Sunday Star Times.

One of the leaders of the Bible Class was a volunteer from Life in Focus Trust and was not qualified to teach. They told reporters that the "parents did not need to be notified because classes were 'history lessons' as the Bible was factually accurate."

McClintock is now taking the Red Beach School Board of Trustees to New Zealand's High Court for disregarding their duties as set forth by the Education Act of 1989 and for conducting themselves in a manner inconsistent with the New Zealand Bill of Rights.

One Board of Trustee member decried the legal action, calling it a “frustration” and “distraction from core business.”

The first hearing will be held on March 26 in the High Court in Auckland.
