Memphis TV Reporter Shocked Over Atheist Convention (Video)

Americans are protected under the U.S. Constitution to practice religion or to choose not to, but the idea of atheists gathering in Memphis shocked a local reporter.

The American Atheist National Convention will be held at the Peabody Hotel on April 2-5, 2015, which is also Easter weekend.

While the convention in no way negates Easter Sunday for Christians, WMC Action News 5 reporter Sasha Jones sounded the alarm, "Atheists from across the country are flocking to Memphis and staying at the hotel on Resurrection Sunday!”

“The group’s decision to come to Memphis may rub people the wrong way,” added Jones (video below).

Jones then interviewed shocked residents about the convention of non-believers who are peacefully assembling at the hotel.

According to The Friendly Atheist some responses from Memphis residents included:

"I don't think it's right."

“It’s kind of disrespectful to people who do believe.”

“Everything [is] about ‘Christ is risen.’ You know, anything that comes against that, can’t touch it.”

At one point in the report, American Atheist Director of Development Nick Fish calmly stated, "We want to show people that they don't have to stay in a religion they no longer believe in, because there is a community waiting on them when they leave."

One of the scheduled speakers is from The Satanic Temple, but no spells are expected to be cast.

Jones added, “We did reach out to the Peabody Hotel for a comment, but we have not heard back from them just yet.”

However, Jones didn't explain why the Peabody needed to comment on atheists peacefully meeting in the hotel as hundreds of organizations do every year.
