The revelation that last week’s Boston Marathon bombing was allegedly carried out by Muslims has created a noticeable divide amongst people on the left.
While most liberals made it no secret that they were hoping that the suspects would turn out to be white, when it was reported that these guys were in fact Muslims, the way the information was interpreted varied. Host of HBO’s Real Time, Bill Maher, held nothing back this past Friday when he criticized the Islamic faith for promoting violence. Conversely, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, the right’s favorite new left-wing punching bag, argued that Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev being Muslim is irrelevant to this case right now.
While discussing the Tsarnaev brothers’ motives for allegedly setting off bombs at the Boston Marathon, Harris-Perry said this: “We don’t really know. The younger brother, he’s getting all kinds of tweets from his friends. I think part of the answer is that it’s still an open question.”
She added: “I keep wondering: is it possible that there would ever be a discussion like, ‘oh, this is because of Ben Affleck and the connection between Boston and movies about violence? And, of course, the answer is ‘no.’”
“Given that they’re Chechen, given that they are literally Caucasian, our very sense of connection to them is this framed up notion of, like, Islam making them into something that is non-[unintelligible].”
Harris-Perry’s Ben Affleck analogy is horrible and fails instantly, but her main point is clear. She is saying that, as of this moment, it is unknown why these guys did what they allegedly did. The natural, obvious assumption is that it was because of their faith; however, until someone actually verifies that, it’s just an assumption.
Technically she’s correct. But seeing as that notion is mostly just based on the public temporarily not being fully aware of the facts of this case, it’s an odd position to stake out.
