Christian Rock Star Comes Out As Gay (Video)

Trey Pearson, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Everyday Sunday, publicly announced that he is gay on June 1 (video below).

Pearson wrote a coming-out letter to those closest to him. Part of the letter was made public by 614 Columbus, a publication in Columbus, Ohio:

Most of us reach at least one pivotal moment in our lives that better defines who we are. These last several months have been the hardest—but also have ended up being the most freeing months—of my life. To make an extremely long story short, I have come to be able to admit to myself, and to my family, that I am gay.

Pearson told the magazine months earlier: "I’m gay, and one of the only people who knows is my wife."

"I have no problem being gay and being a Christian," Pearson told WSYX, a Columbus TV station. "I believe Jesus absolutely loves me the way I am. He created me this way."

The 35-year-old singer said that he and his wife are no longer together after seven years of marriage and two children, but are still friends.

"When she was able to understand, and when I told her, when she was able to just hug me and tell me how much she loved me and tell me how proud of me she was, that's when I was able to realize I was going to be okay," Pearson added.

Pearson said that he grew up in a conservative Christian household and that his family believed being gay was wrong, in accordance with numerous verses in the Bible.

"The most important thing is to love your neighbor as yourself and if you can do that, you can learn how to love God, and by doing that you are loving God," Pearson told the news station.

Pearson and his Christian band plan to perform at a local gay pride festival on June 17.

"I absolutely know that God will be with us as we celebrate at Pride Festival," Pearson added. "And God is with me as I seek God in everything I do."
