A former Columbia University graduate student with an assistantship was arrested on Nov. 25 for allegedly grabbing his 14-year-old relative by the hair and dragging her to a car, before slapping her across the face for not wearing a hijab.
According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, 53-year-old Youssif Omar was at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, when he noticed a 14-year-old family member was not wearing the traditional Muslim headscarf.
Omar became angry and grabbed the girl “very violently by the hair,” according to Officer Latisha Stroer. He reportedly pulled her outside and dragged her down a flight of stairs, before slapping her face and pulling her by the hair into his car.
Omar was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and released from jail after posting $4,500 bail, reports the Daily Mail.
