Hoping to capitalize on the unprecedented buzz surrounding Barack Obama's historic inauguration, donut king Krispy Kreme recently announced a promotion to give away one free donut to every customer on Inauguration Day. In order to promote the event, Krispy Kreme released the following statement:
"Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. is honoring American's sense of pride
and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice
to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating
Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just
another reminder of how oh-so-sweet "free" can be."
No sooner had the press release hit the wires than activists were protesting what they saw as an tacit endorsement of a pro-choice agenda and President Obama's pledge to uphold abortion's legality.
In a sharply worded statement, American Life League president, Judie Brown wrote:
"The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access and celebration of 'freedom of
choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand."
his inauguration with "Freedom of Choice" doughnuts – only two days before the
anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion – is not
only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of
a national tragedy."
The American Life League (ALL) was not alone in their interpretation that the promotion had a hidden pro-choice message. In addition to ALL's calls for Krispy Kreme to "separate themselves and their donuts from our great American shame," pro-life and religious groups across the country began pressuring the corporation to retract the statement.
Apparently their voices were loud enough to be heard in Krispy Kreme's executive offices. On Wednesday, Krispy Kreme issued a revised version of the promotional statement that stripped out the offensive wording and emphasized that the give away was completely apolitical. The release read in part:
"Krispy Kreme Doughnuts’ Inauguration Day promotion on Tuesday, January 20, 2009,
offered one free doughnut of a customer’s choice at participating Krispy Kreme
Inauguration Day promotion was not about any social or political issue."
The American Life League responded to the change by praising the announcement and pledging that they will continue to purchase Krispy Kreme's famous warm and glazed donuts "not only on January 20, but for years to come."
