Kansas Church Is Building New $90 Million Sanctuary (Video)

The biggest United Methodist Church in the country is planning to build a new $90 million sanctuary.

The Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, already has a 70-acre facility where its 20,000 members attend up to six services on Sunday (video below).

The current church is so large that one volunteer uses binoculars when watching from the back. The church added 1,500 new members in 2014.

"I think they'll say when they drive past, I think they'll say, 'I want to go inside,'" Pastor Adam Hamilton told KSHB.

Hamilton admits that some church members don't think there should be an expensive new sanctuary, but adds, "You're constantly having to say, 'Wait a minute, this is something that's gonna actually increase what's done for the poor.'"

Hamilton claims the new building will increase members and donations for missions and the poor.

Hamilton says church members have pledged $65 million toward the new church, which is expected to be finished in Easter of 2017.

The Kansas Health Institute noted in 2014 that thousands of school children in the state are dependent on food banks for nutrition.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.7% of Kansas residents lived below the poverty line from 2009-2013.

KMBC reported in 2013 that homeless people were actually living in tunnels underneath Kansas City.
