Islamic Group Blames Trump For Islamophobia

The Council on American-Islamic Relations in St. Louis has blamed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for what it says is an increasing trend of Islamophobia in the U.S.

KMOX reports that the chapter’s director, Faizan Syed, made the connection after a Feb. 21 incident involving a man in Affton, Missouri, who started brandishing a gun at a Muslim family looking to buy a house in his neighborhood.

“We live in a nation today where people like Trump, where people like the Republican GOP have mainstreamed Islamophobia,” Syed said. "[They] have made it OK. It’s OK to take out a gun and threaten somebody."

The group is hoping for charges to be pressed against the Affton man.

In February, CAIR condemned Trump’s recounting of a tall tale from World War I, in which U.S. General John Pershing allegedly shot Muslim prisoners in the Philippines with bullets soaked in pigs’ blood, Talking Points Memo reported.

“By directly stating that the only way to stop terrorism is to murder Muslims in graphic and religiously-offensive ways, he places the millions of innocent, law-abiding citizens in the American Muslim community at risk from rogue vigilantes.” Nihad Awad, the group's executive director, said in a statement.

Snopes.com reportedly investigated the story and found no historical record of it, instead tracing it back to a scene from a 1939 film.
