Islamic State militants released a video Tuesday showing dozens of Yazidis converting to Islam after being threatened with death if they refused.
The video came soon after a video of American photojournalist James Foley’s execution was posted by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militants and viewed by thousands of people, according to the Daily Mail.
Hundreds of the minority religious Yazidi group have been captured by ISIS as the extremists have taken control of areas in northern Iraq. Tens of thousands of Yazidis have fled to the mountains to escape further persecution.
The video released Tuesday shows the about 60 Yazidi men in a hall listening to an imam talk about the virtues of Islam, according to the Washington Post.
The video also shows scenes at a mosque where the Yazidi are praying. Additionally it shows Yazidis hugging Islamic State militants.
ISIS has also captured hundreds of Yazidi women who have also been told to convert or been sold as slaves.
In the more than 10-minute-long video, one ISIS fighter says that Western nations have lied about the abduction of Yazidi individuals.
“Men, women and children have converted and I was with them and they are happy with their conversions,” he says in the footage. “We advise the Yazidis to come down from the mountain and convert.”
“If they stay on the mountain, they will die of starvation and thirst,” the man adds. “This talk about aid from Western and crusader countries is all lies.”
The Yazidis are part of Iraq’s Kurdish minority and their persecution was one of the reasons for a U.S. airstrike against ISIS this month.
Hundreds of Yazidis have been shot and some were buried alive according to witnesses of recent attacks.
