Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is under fire from at least 14 wildfires in the drought-ridden area. Residents and visitors are evacuating, while firefighters struggle to get the blazes under control (video below).
"If you’re a person of prayer, we could use your prayers," Gatlinburg Fire Chief Greg Miller said on Nov. 28, notes KFOR.
The wildfire began in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and spread to other areas thanks to wind gusts of up to 70 mph that took down power lines and carried embers to start new fires. Authorities say that some homes and businesses have been "completely lost to fire."
WBIR lists these ways to help:
The American Red Cross is accepting donations for evacuees and first responders to the Sevier County fire.
The organization is accepting donations at the Pigeon Forge Fire Hall Station 1 at 3229 Rena Street in Pigeon Forge.
The Red Cross is not looking for untrained volunteers, but is accepting monetary donations. People can make a $10 donation by texting "REDCROSS" to 90999.
Disaster victims and their families can register on the American Red Cross website to find each other. Facebook has also activated its safety check feature for the fires.
WBIR also listed restaurants that provide free meals to first responders and accept donations:
All Collier Restaurant Group restaurants in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge will feed first responders for free.
Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and Grill at 240 Apple Valley Road in Sevierville will provide free meals to first responders. The restaurant will also accept donations for the American Red Cross.
All Firehouse Sub locations in the Knoxville area will accept donations of bottled water, energy drinks, Gatorade and anything of the like. The restaurants will also work with local officials to provide food to firefighters.
Commercial Bank’s Knoxville and Newport locations are collecting items such as water, Gatorade and power bars to help fire crews and first responders. Locations include West Knoxville, Fountain City, Halls and Powell. Collected items will be delivered Thursday afternoon.
