Arizona's Reverend Bob Larson Offers Electronic Exorcisms

An Arizona reverend is putting a new spin on an old – if frightening – ritual: he’s offering to conduct exorcisms via Skype.

Reverend Bob Larson has explained the process whereby a person is freed from a demon. “In simple terms, an exorcism is the process of expelling an evil spirit from an individual who has become somehow invaded and demonize by that being, and sending it back to hell."

Larson, an evangelical Christian, has conducted more than 20,000 exorcisms. Most of these have been in person, but may have been conducted in front of laptop cameras.

Typically and traditionally, exorcisms have been conducted in person. While not everyone agrees on the validity of the process, some claiming that it is nothing more than an act, members of certain religions do have faith in its effectiveness.

Larson’s Skype exorcism routine includes using hand gestures, such as crossing a person’s forehead or thrusting a cross, which he does directly in front of the camera. He also relies on virtual eye contact.

Exorcisms have long been the topic of gory horror movies; the new tradition of cyber exorcisms will undoubtedly spark its own genre of cinematic cyber horror.
