Some conservative Christian leaders are pushing for 10th Circuit Appeals Court Judge Neil Gorsuch to be confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Evangelist Franklin Graham asked his Facebook followers on April 3 to pray that Gorsuch is confirmed, and said those who oppose Gorsuch had a "socialist worldview:"
President Donald J. Trump promised that he would nominate a Supreme Court Justice in the vein of Judge Antonin Scalia, a constitutionalist—and he kept his word. That’s what the Democratic left is opposing. They don’t seem to want someone who strongly supports our Constitution.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and others desperately want an activist justice who will legislate from the bench, usurping the role of Congress, and who would promote their socialist worldview. Join me in praying that the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch in the U.S. Senate will be finalized this week.
The Family Policy Alliance, the political arm of the Christian ministry Focus on the Family, created an online petition to call for Gorsush's confirmation.
"As a jurist with impeccable credentials, Judge Gorsuch would make a wonderful addition to the high court," the petition states. "His position on the judicial branch -- interpreting the law, instead of making law -- makes him uniquely qualified to assume the seat left vacant by the untimely death of Justice Antonin Scalia."
Brian Brown, a Roman Catholic who leads the National Organization for Marriage, was a leading advocate against same-sex marriage, noted The New York Times in 2013.
Now, Brown is calling for Gorsuch to be confirmed in a first step to overturn same-sex marriage, which became the law of the land because of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2015.
In an email blast to his followers on April 3, Brown issued a statement and an online petition calling for Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to use the so-called "nuclear option," which would change the Senate rules to overcome a Democratic filibuster, notes Right Wing Watch:
As you know, the path to reversing the illegitimate, anti-constitutional ruling of the Supreme Court redefining marriage begins with the confirmation of Judge Gorsuch. Once he becomes a justice, we will likely be only one vote shy of reversing this horrible decision...
Judge Gorsuch’s record shows that he is committed to stopping judicial activism and interpreting cases on the basis of what the constitution actually says rather than on the basis of an ideological bias or of a desire to legislate from the bench.
Such judicial activism has been evident in many decisions of the last several decades, including notably the fateful Roe v. Wade decision on abortion in 1973 and the much more recent Obergefell decision that sought to supplant a radical redefinition of marriage for what marriage intrinsically is: the union of one man and one woman.
Like Justice Scalia whom he will replace, Judge Gorsuch surely sees the errors of these decisions and, if given the opportunity, will rule to overturn them and put our country back on the right track of respecting life and marriage.
