The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) has been introduced to Congress since 1994, but has not yet passed.
The bill would prohibit discrimination in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity by non-government and non-religious employers with at least 15 employees.
ENDA is once again in front of Congress, but several Christian leaders are fighting the proposed measure.
Liberty Counsel head Mat Staver warned in a recent "Freedom’s Call" radio alert that ENDA would “harm women and children," but didn't explain how, noted RightWingWatch.org (audio below).
"If the secularists are successful in passing ENDA, then schools and daycare centers will be forced to hire cross-dressers. Religious organizations will be forced to violate their conscience and businesses will no longer be allowed to regulate employer dress codes," said Staver.
The Family Research Council's Peter Sprigg told the Janet Mefferd radio show on Tuesday: "ENDA is an effort to legislate morality, but it’s not our morality, it’s not Christian morality, it’s the immorality of those who accept homosexual conduct” (audio below).
"ENDA is an effort to enshrine into law the moral principle that it is wrong to disapprove of homosexual conduct. That it is wrong to present yourself as the biological sex you were created by God. So this is a direct assault on the moral values to anyone who holds to traditional Christian teachings, claimed Sprigg, reports RightWingWatch.org.
However, there are no verses in the Bible that support businesses discriminating against cross-dressing people or homosexuals in employment.
