Christian Historian: FBI Says I'm A Hate Group (Video)

Christian historian David Barton said in February that he was on a FBI hate group list because he believes marriage is only between one man and one woman (video below).

According to, Barton made his extraordinary statement while giving a talk at a Christian conference for men.

Barton stated:

"In this culture, in this day, if you speak out, you will be attacked. There is no question about it. The other side has found one of the greatest political tools that exists is being able to harass you for what you believe and what you say, and so we don't want to say certain things.

"For example, when the nondiscrimination ordinance passed in San Antonio, it's a class C misdemeanor if you stand up and say, 'I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.' It's a $500 a day fine. You cannot run for office in San Antonio, and if you're in office and say that you get dismissed from office for malfeasance." reports that Barton's statements about San Antonio were not true.

According to the City of San Antonio's fact sheet about the ordinance, none of what Barton mentioned appears, but there is a section that protects religious organizations: "The employment exemption allows a religious organization to show a preference in employment based upon religion and will apply to organizations whose 'purpose and character are primarily religious."

"Look me up, the FBI has got me on their site," Barton added. "I'm one of the hate groups in America. They just came out with a new list for this year, I'm on the list as a hate group because I think marriage should be between a man and a woman. That means I 'hate' those who don't marry that way."

Barton's audience cheered.

Christian psychologist and blogger Warren Throckmorton wrote in a blog post on March 10 that he was unable to find Barton or Barton's organization, Wallbuilders, on the FBI website.

Throckmorton also called the FBI press office and asked where he could find the hate group list and if Barton's name appeared on it. Throckmorton said he was told that no such list exists.
