Barton made the confirmation on Glenn Beck's internet show to promote an event this weekend in Texas to launch Beck's new book, "Liars: How Progressives Exploit Our Fears for Power and Control," notes Right Wing Watch.
"By the way, you have your doctorate, don't you?" Beck asked, and Barton answered, "That's what they claim, yeah, I've got papers for it."
"You have your doctorate in education," Beck followed up.
"Yeah, that's right," Barton replied.
"OK, so he's a doctor of education," Beck announced as Barton smiled. "So, he's not just some cowboy riding in, he's not me. Well, I am a doctor, yes, but I decided to go with podiatry. So, David has an actual doctorate."
In February, Barton said that he did not and also did have a doctorate (Ph.D) during an interview with "Focus Today" on TheDove TV, reported Right Wing Watch:
Usually they say, "Oh, you haven't been trained in history, you don't have a Ph.D." Well, that's true. All I've got is the original documents. I'm sorry, I don't have the Ph.D. Actually, I do have a Ph.D. but I've got the original documents as well.
I just don't consider myself an academic. I consider myself a lover of truth. And so I want to see what the actual historical truth is, which is why I go back to those records.
Barton's bio on his Wallbuilders Live! website states:
David holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oral Roberts University and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Pensacola Christian College. He has been a recipient of national and international awards including Who’s Who in Education and DAR’s highest award, the George Washington Honor Medal. His work in media and the educational medium have merited several Angel Awards, Telly Awards, and the Dove Foundation Seal of Approval.
