Christian Flag Removed From Alabama City Hall

Following a complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the City of Glencoe, Alabama, will no longer fly the Christian flag from City Hall.

Glencoe Mayor Charles Gilchrist confirmed that the flag was taken down after receiving the complaint from the FFRF in March.

He said that the flag was taken down because the foundation threatened legal action if the flag was not taken down and a prolonged legal fight would likely cost more than the city could afford.

The mayor said the city attorney warned him that another town had to pay $500,000 plus $50,000 in legal fees after being sued for something similar.

"That would just about ruin us," said Gilchrist. "That's what they do, they pick on these smaller towns that can't defend ourselves."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation also challenged nativity scenes in Glencoe and nearby Rainbow City just last year.

Gilchrist said that he is still looking at options to work around the letter and legally fly the flag, but that he had to “look out for the best interests of the city.”
