After a fight allegedly broke out between the pastor of a Mississippi church and some members of the congregation, police shot and killed one man while trying to restore order.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman, Warren Strain, said that shooting happened on Sunday at the Asia Baptist Church. The man who was killed has been identified as 26-year-old Cacedric White.
"It was getting out of hand and causing a disturbance, so they called [the] Lexington Police Department," said Holmes County Sheriff's Office Capt. Sam Chambers. "When [police] got here, they needed backup, so they called the sheriff's office, and we sent one deputy out here. Then some shots were fired, and the deputy called for backup."
Chambers tried to explain what happened with White.
"His parents were inside the church,” Chambers said. “When he got out of the vehicle, he got out of the vehicle with a gun. Officers were standing in the door, and they commanded him to stop with the gun and put it down. He refused and was still walking toward them when the officers fired.”
Deputies said White had a shotgun.
“And they were shooting, and the next thing I knew, my son was laying on the ground,” said Cacedric’s mother, Ada White. “And I told them, I said, ‘Y'all have shot my son.’”
“I saw him get out of the car. I didn't see him with a gun. I just, next thing I saw, I heard gunshots. That's all and I looked around. I saw him falling.”
