The Southern Baptist Convention, which represents the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., is encouraging people to get married at an earlier age to avoid premarital sex.
Andrew Walker, of the Southern Baptist Convention's public policy division, recently told NPR:
The reality is, starting at the age of 12, 13, boys and men, growing up into maturity, are hardwired for something that God gave us a desire for and an outlet for. And so to suppress that becomes more difficult the older you get.
Walker promotes young marriage at conferences and speeches staged by the Southern Baptist's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
The New York Times reported last year that divorce has been declining in the U.S. because "fewer people are getting married — and some of the biggest declines in marriage have come among groups at risk of divorce. But it also seems to be the case that marriages have gotten more stable, as people are marrying later."
