For weeks, WikiLeaks has been publishing hacked emails from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton adviser John Podesta's account.
One of the emails, dated June 6, 2015, is a dinner invitation from performance artist Marina Abramovic to Podesta's brother Tony: "I am so looking forward to the Spirit Cooking dinner at my place. Do you think you will be able to let me know if your brother is joining?"
WikiLeaks tried to fan the spook factor with this misleading tweet: "The Podestas' 'Spirit Cooking' dinner? It's not what you think. It's blood, sperm and breastmilk. But mostly blood."
WikiLeaks also included a link to WeAreChange.org, which posted a video from 1997 of Abramovic with this caption: "In the video, Abramovic is seen painting the recipe for these 'spirit dinners,' using what appears to be thickly congealed blood. The recipe read, at one point, 'mix fresh breast milk with fresh sperm, drink on earthquake nights.'"
The pro-Trump conspiracy website InfoWars.com linked to the WikiLeaks email and WeAreChange.org, and screamed this headline: "'Spirit Cooking': Clinton Campaign Chairman Practices Bizarre Occult Ritual."
There is no evidence that either Podesta brother went to the dinner or are involved in any occult rituals.
Another Podesta email that conservatives are upset about is a news clipping that was circulated by the U.S. State Department on May 22, 2015.
The email cited this commentary written by Wall Street Journal reporter Byron Tau:
Mrs. Clinton was informed several times in 2011 about the deteriorating security situation in Benghazi and the dangers that diplomatic staff on the ground were facing, *emails show*
Chris Stevens, then a special representative to the transitional government, considered aborting a mission in Benghazi in April 2011 because of the danger. But State Department officials warned that an abrupt departure would send a signal.
“Departure would send a significant political signal, and would be interpreted as the U.S. losing confidence in the [Libyan transitional government],” a state department staff member named Timmy Davis wrote in a note forwarded to Mrs. Clinton.
Except for Davis' quote, the content is Tau's words.
The email is being touted on social media sites and right wing sites, such as Conservative Daily Post, as "evidence" that Stevens was left to die in the infamous Benghazi terror attack by former Secretary of State Clinton.
What Tau failed to mention, and WikiLeaks did not clarify, is that the Benghazi attack did not occur until over a year later, in September 2012.
The email was actually in regard to the danger posed by former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi's forces in Ajdabiyah:
The situation in Ajdabiyah has worsened to the point where Stevens is considering departure from Benghazi. The envoy's delegation is currently doing a phased checkout (paying the hotel bills, moving some comms to the boat, etc).
He will monitor the situation to see if it deteriorates further, but no decision has been made on departure. He will wait 2-3 more hours, then revisit the decision on departure. He received reports of shelling last night in Ajdabiyah as well as snipers shooting people in the city.
AFRICOM reported Qadhafi's forces took the eastern and western gates of Ajdabiyah, with 5 vehicles at the eastern gate and 50 at the western gate. More Qadhafi forces are heading to Ajdabiyah from Brega. The Brits report Qadhafi forces are moving from Sirte to Brega, which they interpret as preparation for another assault on Ajdabiyah today.
He plans to discuss the situation further with the Brits, Turks, and the TNC to see if this is an irreversible situation. Departure would send a significant political signal, and would be interpreted as the U.S. losing confidence in the TNC.
Initial message to the TNC would frame the departure as due to security grounds and as a temporary measure only. Polaschik said she would discuss these developments with Amb. Cretz. If the group departs, the contract for the boat stipulates they return to Greece. One scenario could be the group stages elsewhere for a few days.
