The White House responded to claims from former FBI Director James Comey during his Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, insisting President Donald Trump is "not a liar."

In a statement, the White House denied claims made by Comey that Trump "defamed" him and the agency.

"I can definitely say the president’s not a liar," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said following the testimony, reports The Associated Press.

Comey said the Trump administration attempted to defame the FBI by spreading "lies, plain and simple."

"Although the law required no reason at all to fire an FBI director, the administration then chose to defame me, and more importantly the FBI, by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader," he said, Business Insider reported.

"Those were lies, plain and simple. And I am so sorry that the FBI workforce had to hear them and that the American people were told them."
