A photo showing a Russian separatist fighter stealing what appears to be a ring from a victim of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 has gone viral.
The picture has not been independently identified, as the Daily Mail notes, but it appears to show three Russian separatist fighters rifling through the belongings of passengers who died when Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine last week. One of the fighters appears to pull out a ring belonging to one of the victims. The picture is reportedly a still from a video of the men going through the victims’ belongings.
Once the picture went viral, people all over the Internet blasted the separatist fighters for stealing from the innocent victims of the recent tragedy. One user named Sean Callaghan noted that if the soldier was indeed stealing from the victim, it is “an appalling act of inhumanity.”
Some, however, have wondered if the men are going through the belongings in an attempt to identify bodies rather than steal the items. Despite some optimism, it is no secret that rebels have allegedly mishandled bodies of the victims in the days following the tragedy.
“We are already shocked by the news we got today of bodies being dragged around, of the site not being treated properly,” Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans reportedly told Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko.
Pro-Russian militants reportedly shot down Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 over East Ukraine as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and all 298 innocent passengers were killed. An investigation is ongoing while tensions between Russia and the Ukraine increase.
