While many Republicans are asking Rep. Todd Akin to bow out of his U.S. Senate race with Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, some GOP members are defending him, including Mike Huckabee and Rep. Steve King.
Over the weekend, Rep. Akin claimed that women could not get pregnant from a "legitimate rape,' but then retracted his comment claiming his information was based on "medical reports."
During an interview with KMEG-TV, on Monday, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) refused to condemn Rep. Akin: “Todd Akin is a strong Christian man, with a wonderful family. I think this election should be about, how did Todd Akin vote and what did he vote for and what did he stand for and, in this case, I’m seeing the same thing, petty personal attacks substituting for strong policy."
King also doubled-down on his support for the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would ban federal abortion funding except in cases of “forcible rape," reports Mediaite.com.
When asked about girls under eighteen being raped and getting pregnant, Rep. King said: “Well I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way and I’d be open to hearing discussion about that subject matter.”
