At a town hall event in South Carolina this past week, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich was asked about the state’s decision to fly the Confederate flag at the statehouse in Columbia, South Carolina. The woman who asked the question was met with boos from the audience (video below).
“I have a very strong opinion,” Gingrich said, prefacing his response. “It’s up to the people of South Carolina.” Gingrich got a standing ovation and yells of approval from the audience.
Gingrich then assured his audience that he is opposed to segregation and slavery, but apparently not symbols of segregation and slavery.
