Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California has grave words for the current Syrian refugee crisis, calling it “the destruction of Western civilization, not by an armed invasion, but by envelopment.”
Rohrabacher gave his prediction during a Capitol Hill hearing on Nov. 4. He chairs the House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and, and Emerging Threats, according to CNS News.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees have been fleeing from war-torn countries in the Middle East as the Syrian Civil War and the growing influence of terrorist group ISIS have ravaged the region. European nations have been overwhelmed by the swelling number of refugees, with countries such as Germany welcoming as many as they can while Hungary has barred any from entering their border.
"What we have seen over the past few months is unsustainable, and if not checked, will change the fundamental nature of European countries which are now being inundated," says Rohrabacher, according to CSN News.
“It is expected that around a million asylum seekers of all origins will reach Germany in this year alone,” the representative continues. "Even the most optimistic scenarios say that Europe will have to re-direct billions and billions of dollars from supporting their own citizens to accommodating the needs of these refugees.”
Rohrabacher has been critical of countries such as Germany allowing large numbers of refugees into their border while also criticizing the U.S. stance on the crisis.
The representative has claimed that many of the sectarian conflicts ravaging the Middle East could have been avoided if the U.S. had been more cooperative with Russia, who also holds a stake in the region, RT reports.
“Had we been working with the Russians all along in good faith, I believe the situation in the Middle East would have been totally different, and better, more stable,” says Rohrabacher, according to RT.
During a House panel on Oct. 27, Rohrabacher also recommended that the U.S. should prioritize the safety of Christians and other religious minorities feeling from the Syrian conflict, Breitbart reports.
The representative argues that the Christian refugees are the ones being targeted for genocide by ISIS. He adds that too many of those who are being accepted into European nations are “military-aged people who, if they are against radical Islam, they should be there fighting radical Islam,” according to Breitbart.
