President Obama slammed Congress on Tuesday for not passing a national background check law in light of the recent mass shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon.
“We’re the only developed country on Earth where this happens,” President Obama said during a Q&A with the social media site Tumblr, notes ThinkProgress.org (video below). “And it happens now once a week and it’s a one-day story. There’s no place else like this.
“Levels of gun violence are off the charts,” President Obama added. ”There is no advanced developed country on Earth that would put up with this.”
President Obama also mentioned that Australia enacted tough gun laws following just one mass killing.
“Couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting, similar to Columbine or Newtown,” President Obama recalled. “And Australia just said, 'Well, that’s it, we’re not doing, we’re not seeing that again,' and basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws, and they haven’t had a mass shooting since.”
A study in 2013 found that the U.S. has the most gun ownership and gun-related deaths of any developed nation, reported ABC News.
USA Today notes that there have been more than 200 mass killings (4 or more people, per the FBI) in the U.S. since 2006, which averages to about one every two weeks.
Everytown, a group started by former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, states on their website that there have been 74 school shootings in America since the Sandy Hook school shooting in December 2012.
