Airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition killed an estimated 2,500 ISIS fighters in December 2015 and another 60 in just the first few days of January 2016, according to a military spokesman.

The coalition carrying out Operation Tidal Wave II, according to Army Col. Steve Warren, carried out 65 airstrikes against ISIS oil facilities from Jan. 2 to 6.

“We're also hitting them in the pocketbook,” Warren said.

The airstrikes became increasingly focused on Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, which has been under ISIS control since 2014. Since August, more than 700 targets around Mosul were hit.

The coalition killed a number of senior ISIS members in the last few weeks of 2015, perhaps most notably Charaffe al Mouadan, an operative linked closely to the ringleader of the Nov. 13, 2015, attacks in Paris.

Warren told CNN at the time that 10 senior leaders in both Syria and Iraq, “including several external attack planners,” were killed in airstrikes.
