U.S. Army Names First Openly Lesbian General, Tammy S. Smith

Publish date:

U.S. Army Officer Tammy S. Smith, on Sunday, was promoted the rank of Brigadier General, making her the first openly lesbian military general in U.S. history.

Smith, a co-founder of Military Partners and Families Coalition [LGBT advocacy group], openly admitted to being a lesbian by having her wife, Tracey Hepner, pin her first star to her uniform, reports the New York Times.

Congress repealed the U.s. military's 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell' policy in 2011. However, same sex partners of active duty soldiers still do not get the same benefits as heterosexual couples.
