Two Secret Service agents are under investigation after allegedly taking selfies with President Donald Trump's grandson as he slept.
The incident took place in mid-March, Mother Jones reported. Two Secret Service agents were driving Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump's 8-year-old son, Donald Trump III, from their family estate in Westchester, New York, back into Manhattan.
The 8-year-old woke up as agents were allegedly taking selfies, and was "freaked out," according to the Daily Mail. He told his mother about the incident as soon as he arrived home, and then she told his father.
The alleged incident immediately became a topic of conversation by those at the very top of the Secret Service. The agents involved in "selfiegate" have since been summoned to the Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility in Washington, D.C.
The Secret Service issued a statement on March 15:
The US Secret Service is aware of a matter involving two of our agents and one of our protectees. Our Office of Professional Responsibility will always thoroughly review a matter to determine the facts and to ensure proper, long-standing protocols and procedures are followed. The Secret Service would caution individuals to not jump to conclusions that may grossly mischaracterize the matter.
Several social media users were outraged by the news.
"GROWN men photograph a sleeping eight year old? Time to FIRE them," wrote one commenter. "This is unacceptable and they are not trustworthy. They know better than this."
"No one takes the president or his family seriously," wrote another. "Why is this a surprise to anyone, I'm shocked they didn't draw a [mustache] on him."
"Thank goodness for Moms," wrote another observer. "These two security guys were probably stiff though doesn't excuse what they did. They believed they would be James Bonds but end up baby sitting. Much like following the Windsor clan around the world."
Other commenters expressed their concerns about how taxpayer dollars are being utilized.
"The only reason the American people fork out billions of dollars for secret service security is because it's the only nation that had serious gun crime," wrote the commenter. "What a waste of resources. It's astounding taxpayers continue to pay out to have ex presidents followed around.
"How ridiculous a small boy travels around alone in a limousine with two minders paid by the government. Taxes could be [channeled] instead on health, education and fighting poverty. Get rid of your stupid gun laws which give Americans the freedom to kill one another."
