When President Donald Trump met with the French first lady he made a comment about her appearance, and the world took notice (video below).
On July 13, Trump stopped by France during his European tour for Germany's G-20 conference, notes Politico. When he shook hands with French President Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte, he grasped her hand for some time, as shown in the video. Later, he remarked that she was "beautiful."
"You're in such good shape," the the president said to Mrs. Macron.
He then turned to her husband and repeated the comment.
The Macrons are 24 years apart in age; the French first lady, previously President Macron's teacher, is older. President Trump is also 24 years older than his wife, Melania Trump, who also was present.
Macron invited Trump to join him for Bastille Day festivities, notes The New York Times. Though the pair have been terse with each other in earlier interactions, on this day they offered supportive comments to each other. Trump reportedly reached over to touch Macron's arm on several occasions.
"My willingness is to continue to work with the United States," Macron told reporters of the two leaders' disagreements regarding the Paris Agreement, according to The Times. "I understand it is important to save jobs."
Though Macron did not approve of Trump's decision to pull out of the environmental pact, he did say that he understood the U.S. president's reasoning, while Trump suggested that he was open to re-entering the pact under different terms.
"Something could happen with respect to the Paris accord," Trump said. "We'll see what happens. If it happens, it will be wonderful; if it doesn't, that will be okay, too."
Trump praised Macron as "a great leader" and "a great president" when asked if the Frenchman would be able to keep his country safe from terrorist attacks.
"He's not going to be easy on people who are breaking the law," Trump added.
He then looked at Macron and joked, "You better do a good job, please. Otherwise, you're going to make me look bad."
At the news conference, which followed a private meeting between the two world leaders, Trump also spoke about the controversy surrounding his son, Donald Trump Jr., who has been asked to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding his meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, notes NPR.
"My son is wonderful young man," Trump said, according to The Times. "He took a meeting with a Russian lawyer. Not a government lawyer; a Russian lawyer."
The president went on to say that "most people would have taken that meeting."
