President Donald Trump took to Twitter to deliver his highly anticipated response to former FBI Director James Comey after he testified before a Senate Intelligence Committee.
Comey testified on June 8 about the FBI's ongoing investigation of the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russia and the nature of his dismissal by Trump, USA Today reported. He accused the president of lying about the current state of the FBI.
“The administration then chose to defame me -- and, more importantly, the FBI -- by saying the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader,” Comey said in his opening remarks. “Those were lies, plain and simple.”
Comey went on to admit that he himself had leaked the memos describing the conversations he had with Trump in the hopes that it would launch an investigation by a special counsel to take over the Russia investigation.
Comey said he kept notes on his meetings with Trump because he feared the president would lie about the nature of their conversations. He testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee that he told a friend about his memos and asked him to leak the information to the press.
“I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting,” Comey recalled about his meeting with Trump.
“I knew that there might come a day where I might need a record of what happened, ... to defend myself and the FBI and the integrity of our situation, and the independence of our function,” Comey added.
The White House responded to those accusations, the New York Daily News reported.
“I can definitely say the President is not a liar,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. “I think it’s frankly insulting that that question would be asked.”
Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted throughout the hearing and defended his father.
"Did I miss something or did Comey just say he asked a friend to leak information to the press? Is this a joke?" Trump Jr. tweeted.
His father reiterated those comments the following day, also on Twitter.
"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication...and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" the president tweeted.
Comey also spoke about the nature of his termination as the FBI Director.
“I take the President at his word that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” he said. “The endeavor was to change the way the Russia investigation was being conducted.”
